Botox Q&A
What happens to my skin as I age?
Over the course of your life, the skin on your face is subjected to a number of abuses from the elements, namely sun and wind, and the effects of the abuse inevitably take their toll. There are only so many times your skin can bounce back and regenerate throughout your life. Now throw in the fact that your collagen and elastin production begins to wane as you age. For women, especially, the drop in estrogen levels in later life greatly reduce collagen production. The last step in the aging process is a tricky one: gravity. As you age and your skin loses elasticity, it isn’t able to hold the fat underneath as effectively and the fat begins to travel downward, following the laws of gravity. The end result? Wrinkles, deep lines, and sagging skin begin to make their appearance on your face.
Am I a Good Candidate?
The best candidates for Botox have superficial age lines in areas like the forehead and around the eyes. Excellent candidates for fillers have moderate to harsh wrinkles around the nose and mouth.
Candidates must be committed to maintaining healthy skin after the treatment for lasting results. People who are reluctant to undergo surgical facelift procedures are excellent candidates for these injectable treatments.
What will my BOTOX® and Filllers consultation be like?
How does Botox® help?
Botox took the cosmetic industry by storm when the FDA approved its use in 2002 to reduce the appearance of lines between your brows and the crows-feet on the sides of your eyes. Recently, the FDA extended its approval to include forehead wrinkles and lines. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that contract and form the wrinkles and lines. Dr. Amir administers Botox via injections, and results are both immediate and gradual, taking 1-3 days for optimal results. The results typically last up to four months.
What do dermal fillers do?
One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when it comes to aging is the loss of volume in your face, especially in your cheeks and around your nose and mouth. Also called parentheses, the deep lines that extend from your nose and around your mouth begin to form in earnest as your skin loses elasticity and the fat begins to drop.
Dermal fillers plump these areas, restoring volume and reducing your deep lines. At City Dermatology Skin Institute, Dr. Amir uses a number of different injectable fillers, depending on your goals, including:
- Juvéderm™
- Restylane®
- Perlane®
- Radiesse®
- Sculptra®
Dr. Amir can also plump your lips using fillers, which not only adds volume but works to erase the fine lines around your mouth.
